About the Fitzgerald Biosphere

The Fitzgerald Biosphere Region is located on the South Coast of Western Australia and is recognised for its high botanical diversity, species endemism and high level of threats.

Located in the internationally recognised biodiversity hotspot of south-west Australia, the Fitzgerald Biosphere surrounds the Fitzgerald River National Park (most of which is contained within the Biosphere core zonation and contains around 20% of WA’s described plant species) and includes surrounding farmland, towns and coastline.

The Role

The Fitzgerald Biosphere, recognised by UNESCO as one of 785 global biospheres across 142 countries, represents a unique and ecologically significant region where sustainable development and conservation coexist. As part of UNESCO’s ‘Man and the Biosphere’ program, the Fitzgerald Biosphere focuses on harmonising economic activity with environmental and social initiatives.

Governance of the Fitzgerald Biosphere is led by the Fitzgerald Biosphere Community Collective (FBCC) - a network of dedicated local stakeholders and community members who collaborate to implement and promote the Fitzgerald Biosphere Strategic Plan and Action Plan.

We are seeking a proactive and community-minded FBCC Coordinator to strengthen the presence and impact of the Fitzgerald Biosphere initiative across the region. This role is central to maintaining strong stakeholder relationships, promoting the values and brand of the Biosphere, driving fundraising and engagement activities, and celebrating the people and organisations contributing to its mission: “Inspiring a positive future by connecting people and nature today.”

As our organisation enters a pivotal phase of incorporation and business development, the Coordinator will play a key role in providing steady administrative support, demonstrating initiative and working collaboratively to guide the Collective through its next stage of growth.

Who we’re looking for:

An organised, motivated person with a genuine interest in supporting community and environmental outcomes across the Fitzgerald Biosphere Region. You bring a mix of administrative capability, communication skills, and local knowledge that helps connect people and projects efficiently and collaboratively.

We’re looking for someone who can:

  • Confidently handle a range of administrative tasks from preparing meeting materials and managing records to coordinating events and supporting community engagement.

  • Communicate clearly and professionally, both in writing and in person, with strong digital and computer literacy skills.

  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders including with State and Local Government agencies, industry groups, farmers, First Nations Australians, and community groups.

  • Stay organised, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.

  • Work independently while being an active and reliable part of a collaborative team.

You’ll also ideally have:

  • An understanding of the Fitzgerald Biosphere - its communities and environmental values. Check out our website for more information: https://www.fitzgeraldbiosphere.org/

  • Experience preparing or assisting with grants, reports, and project acquittals.

  • Relevant qualifications or reasonable experience in community development, environmental management, or a related field, with proven skills in project management

Practical Requirements:

  • Willingness and capacity to travel occasionally within the region (including overnight trips).

  • A valid ‘C’ class driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle (private travel reimbursed at the ATO-approved rate).

  • Access to a suitable workspace and internet connection for remote work and online meetings.

  • Residing within or near the Fitzgerald Biosphere.
